Spyware
and Spamware are the newest Internet threats. Simply
by surfing the Net and opening web pages your company is susceptible
to unsolicited downloads of Spyware. Its purpose is to gather
information about your shopping habits and to redirect your searches
to specific web sites that sell products ranging from travel to
porn. The download process is invisible.
90%
of business computers we examined in June 2004 had some form of
Spyware on it. The effect
on your computer varies from a slight decrease in performance
to an unstable computer that runs extremely slow and exhibits
"pop ups" without accessing the Internet.
Help
is on the way! Take advantage of the free downloads to protect
your systems!
1.
Bring your desktop operating systems up to date by visiting
www.windowsupdate.com Choose express install and Microsoft will
determine which updates you need. Windows XP users will download
Service Pak 2, which closes many of the gaps in your browser
(Internet Explorer) that allow Spyware to operate.
2.
If you suspect you have Spyware you can download theses free
tools that do an excellent job of removing them.
Spybot
Search and Destroy v 1.3 (4.15MB) www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
Choose download here and follow with download now on the next
page. Be patient, the download process can take awhile because
the site is very busy. Occasionally you may need to choose one
of the other download sites listed. Accept all the defaults including
the registry backup, search for updates, and immunize this system.
After several steps you will be prompted to "start using
the program". Choose check for problems. The process takes
about five minutes. When it is complete you will see a list of
the Spyware on your computer. The number of files will usually
range from five to one hundred. Choose fix problems. If Spybot
was unable to remove any it will ask you if it can automatically
run when you reboot.
Ad-Aware
v 6 (1.7MB) can be downloaded
at lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
Choose the white and green download.com button at the top right
corner of the screen. Choose download now to start the process.
Patience is again a virtue (it is free software after all!). After
downloading the install will begin. Accept the defaults and the
installation process should take less than one minute. Double
click in the red Ad-Aware icon on your desktop. Choose start now
and accept the default settings. After the scan is complete you
will be presented with a list of items to select for deletion.
Put a check mark in each box on the left side for ALL entries.
Press next to start the removal. These tools do not damage your
operating system and will occasionally compete with each other
and remove each other's software. Big Deal
let's get rid
of the Spyware!
Alas,
even these tools can't clean the serious cases. If
you have tried these tools, or don't have the time to hunt and
remove Spyware please give us a call. We have lots of experience
removing the gremlins and can help you prevent them from setting
up camp in your business computers.
